Nursing Home Residences and Indpendence

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The purpose of this study by Gass, Gaustad, Oberst and Hughes (1992) was to test several hypotheses concerning associations between nursing home residents' appraisal of relocation and their degree of functional independence, perceived physical and psychological health, morale and several sociodemographic variables (age, gender, economic status, educational level, type of prior residence, and extent of participation in the decision to relocate). The purpose and the predicted relationships between variables (hypotheses) are spelled out clearly in a single paragraph using methodological/operational concepts so that the reader understands what the research is investigating and also has a concrete notion of the general methodological framework that will be used to test hypotheses. The significance of the problem is identified using research that establishes how stressful relocation can be on nursing home residents and the need for ways to understand this stress and hopefully help residents to better cope with it.

Review of the Literature and Theoretical Framework

The study was grounded in a comprehensive review of the existing literature (36 studies cited, all of which were from well known, respected and peer reviewed sources). The four key factors discussed are: relocation appraisal, functional independence, moral and health of nursing home residents. However, none of the terms were conceptually defined in the actual literatur

ation being recently relocated nursing home residents in nine long-term care facilities in the midwest. Rather, the results of the study may only be generalizable to the particular sample of nursing home residents in the convenience sample or to those with highly similar characteristics. There were a total of 30 recently relocated (relocated within one year of the study) older adults serving as subjects. All conducted analyses were either t-tests or pearson product moment correlations. According to Linton and Gallo (1975), a sample size of 30 is appropriate for use when conducting analyses using these statistics. Research Design Gass et. al (1992) do not state the nature of the research design nor do they provide a rationale for why it was used. However, as noted previously it is descriptive in nature, and does not manipulate any of the examined variables. Given that most of the hypotheses tested in the study were merely statements that associations or relationships would be found between the assessed variables, the descriptive design does appear to be appropriate. While the design does flow from the foundational information presented in the literature review and theoretical framework and, while it is sufficient to examine t
