Post-Partum Depression
This is an excerpt from the paper...
This paper presents an overview and analysis of an article published by Bland (2000) on postpartum depression. The overview summarizes the article's theoretical framework, hypotheses, methodology, findings, conclusions and recommendations. The analysis presents a discussion of the strengths and weakness of the article. The final section of the paper relates the article to the practice of midwifery. The article's basic framework consists of research and theory related to postpartum depression and the factors that cause it. Specifically, Bland (2000) notes that while postpartum depression is customary attributed to biological and psychological factors, more current studies have indicated that factors associated with the birthing process may play at least some role in the development of the condition. The study is designed to test for this possible input. In particular it is noted that greater perceived control associated with the birthing process may be involved in terms of avoiding postpartum depression while less perceived control may be involved in the development of postpartum depression. Locus of control theory is briefly mentioned as a possible mechanism for the control effects; this being an attribution theory in which a person views his/her life circumstances as mostly due to internal factors such as effort, hard work, diligence, and so forth, or to external factors such as fate, luck, and powerful others.
