Has the concept of human responsibility for the protection of the geophysical environment for both present and future generations been tacitly rejected by American society? Surveys consisting of easily answered general questions continue to proclaim that environmental protection is near and dear to the collective American heart. At the same time, however, Americans continue to elect people to the Congress who are hostile to the concept of environmental protection and presidents who, for the most part, provide only lip service support for the concept.
