Socrates and Crito

This is an excerpt from the paper...

1. What are three reasons Socrates gives Crito for not escaping? Answer thoroughly (10 pts)

Reason 1: Socrates cannot jeopardize the well-being of those in Athens who aided in his escape, since the authorities would surely retaliate against them. He will not profit by their misery. Reason 2: It would be wrong to ignore the full authority of the state, having benefited from its protection and "acquiesced in [its] government" (Plato). It would violate the "implied contract that he will do as [the state would] command him"; he would be refusing to obey the law and has failed to convince the state that it is wrong. Reason 3: Socrates declared a preference for death and not exile, but escaping would belie the idea that he is a victim and not a perpetrator. His exile would be "returning evil for evil," a shameful betrayal of his supposed commitment to justice and virtue.
