Ways in which African art manifested its impact on the West in the 20th century can be seen in virtually the whole range of abstract art dating from the post-Impressionist period. Willett (35) locates the origin of African Art in Paris in 1905, when a colony of artists who were to become leading figures in Western art encountered an African mask that one of them (Maurice Vlaminck) had been given.
