Assessing Nursing Service Quality in Brazil and U.S.
This is an excerpt from the paper...
ASSESSING NURSING SERVICE QUALITY: A CROSS-CULTURAL COMPARISON BETWEEN BRAZIL AND THE UNITED STATESThis study measured and compared the perceived quality of delivered nursing services in hospital settings in Brazil and the United States. Within the context of this study purpose, four research hypotheses were tested. The hypothesis that patient perceptions of the quality level of nursing services will be higher in the United States than in Brazil was rejected. The hypothesis that provider perceptions of the quality level of nursing services will be higher in the United States than in Brazil was accepted. The hypothesis that patient perceptions of the quality level of nursing services will be lower than provider perceptions of these services in the United States was rejected. The hypothesis held that patient perceptions of the quality level of nursing services will be higher than provider perceptions of these services in Brazil was accepted. The finding that patient perceptions of nursing care quality in public acute care hospitals in the United States were lower than those of patients in public acute care hospitals in Brazil was somewhat disturbing because the literature suggests that the quality of care provided in public acute care public hospitals in the United States typically is substantially higher than that provided in comparable hospitals in Brazil. Cross-cultural differences between Brazil and the United States may have contributed to this finding

s unattainable for some people and unaffordable for millions of others (Weil, 1994). The same factors that cause health care insurance to be either unattainable or unaffordable also result in delays for the people affected in seeking necessary health care services (Lee, 1993). A typical outcome for such people is that they finally seek emergency medical care when their health conditions have degenerated to the point where such conditions can no longer be ignored.
In the United States, the ideology underlying the health care system is said to be freedom of choice. Greater significance is attached by most politicians and by almost all American physicians to the idea that each individual is able to select her or his own physician than is attached to the concept of universality of access (Pfaff, 1990).
Hypothesis
For the cross-cultural comparison of nursing service quality, several hypotheses were tested. These hypotheses were as follows:
1. Patient perceptions of the quality level of nursing services will be higher in the United States than in Brazil.
2. Provider perceptions of the quality level of nursing services will be higher in the United States than in Brazil.
3. Patient perceptions of the quality level of nursing
