Pitney Bowes

This is an excerpt from the paper...

An analysis of a company for purposes of investment or employment should include a number of the same dimensions. A company that would make a good investment is a sound company, one where the employee is likely to find a job continuing for some time. A company that is a good place to work may be a good investment because it retains a strong and satisfied workforce. A comparison of two companies--Pitney Bowes and Sun Microsystems, Inc.--will show how they satisfy those who would invest or those who would seek an entry level management position.

Pitney Bowes is based in Stamford, Connecticut and manufactures and markets business equipment and services. The company is a world leader in the mailing systems market, with 60 percent of industry sales. Pitney Bowes's businesses include office systems (copier systems, facsimile machines, and Dictaphone voice processing equipment); shipping and weighing systems; the Monarch merchandise marking system; mailroom management services; and a financial service that provides leasing for Pitney Bowes's products and that constituted 18 percent of the company's revenues in 1991. The company emphasizes the development of new technology and software, and over the past six years the company invested approximately half a billion dollars in research and development. The company continues to introduce new products and ranks among the top 100 companies receiving U.S. patents (Hoover's Handbook of American Business

In 1988 Pitney Bowes was identified as a particularly good company for women seeking entry-level positions and a good company for women's advancement. Six women were vice presidents, two were officers of the company, 30 were department directors, and others held the jobs of treasurer, controller, and legal counsel. In addition, three women sat on the board of directors. Opportunities were thought to be increasing as the company moved away from its industrial business and more into the service and information areas (Dusky and Zeitz 54). SUN MICROSYSTEMS, INC. Sun Microsystems is only ten years old, and yet it has become the leading manufacturer of computer workstations. Sun has achieved a 29 percent market share in an industry characterized by volatile but rapid sales growth and vicious competition. The market for workstations was once confined
