Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the medial nerve, the major nerve supplying the hand (Carpal; Mayo; NINDS). The carpal tunnel is a tunnel with three sides composed of bone and the fourth side composed of ligament through which the median nerve and the nine tendons which control the movements of the fingers pass from the wrist into the palm of the hand. Repetitive movements, injury or disease can cause an inflammation and swelling of the tendons or ligament and this puts pressure on the median nerve and causes the symptoms of the disorder. There are several types of causes of carpal tunnel syndrome. Physical causes include those which cause what is known as "repetitive stress injury" and include such things as typing, playing a musical instrument, driving long distances daily such as in a van, truck, on a motorcycle or flying an airplane, hammering, crafts like knitting which involve repetitive movements (Carpal; Mayo; NINDS).
