Intel Corporation

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Intel Corporation introduced the first microprocessor in 1971 and is today the world's largest manufacturer of such devices. Microprocessors are the central processing units in microcomputers. In addition to the 80x86 line of microprocessors, Intel also manufactures peripherals, microcontrollers, microcomputer modules and microcommunications products. Intel is also the largest supplier of erasable, programmable, readonly memories (EPROMs) for microcomputers. These memory components store computer programs and data entered during system operation. The company also provides software for microcomputer operating systems and highlevel networking.

Intel's current primary product line, the 80x86 chip, was begun in 1978. Cited by some analysts as the "chip that started the PC industry," the 8086 used 16bit internal and external data paths and was first introduced commercially in the Compaq Deskpro in 1984. The 8088 chip, developed in 1979, was the chip used in IBM's first personal computer, the XT, introduced in 1981. Similar to the 8086, this chip used 16-bit data paths internally, but an 8-bit external bus. When IBM introduced the PC AT, the 80286 chip by Intel was chosen as its microprocessor. This marked the beginning of Industry Standard Architecture. This chip also used 16-bit data paths both internally and externally, but also featured 24-bit address lines.

In 1985, Intel introduced the 80386SX chip, which used 32bit internal and external data paths and had

ock split in 1987 and a 2for1 split in 1993. An investment in 100 shares of Intel in 1983 at the high price would have cost 1650 dollars. Today, that investment would be worth 12,900 dollars (at the 52week low). While Intel manufactures many different products, it is dependent on the microprocessor chips as its primary source of revenue. Any change in this market puts the company at risk. Part of Intel's success was in its ability to prevent other competitors from reverse engineering the chips. However, two companies, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Chips and Technologies (CAT) were able to enter the 386compatible chip market in 1991. Intel sued to prevent the competition, but eventually lost the suit and the chip market was opened to new competition. Because of Intel's large research and development budget and resources (the company spends approximately 13 percent of revenue on research and development), competitors face a difficult market. Opportunities for Intel come in the form of continuing to improve their product line and in aggressively marketing their products. While the company faces considerable new competition from companies such as AMD and CAT, these companies are not introducing new products, but ra
