Am Institutional Values Audit

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The Institutional Values Audit of the University of America

An institutional values edit involves the comparison of the explicit values of an institution, as encapsulated in various forms of communications such as Web sites and published statements, and its implicit values, as reflected in its actual performance and previous history. In this paper, an institutional values audit of the University of America is conducted. The explicit values of the University of America will be obtained from the mission, goals and objectives, as well as the strategic plan of the institution. On the other hand, the implicit values of the University of America will be determined from the past performance and history of the institution, as reported in on-campus and off-campus publications.

The explicit values of the institution can be divided into four key areas:

Preparation of students to embrace a life-long conception of learning, as well as a positive attitude towards leadership and service;

Provision of an interdisciplinary and engaged learning program founded on a liberal arts tradition that integrates thinking and action (Jacksonville University [JU], n. d., "Mission and Vision of Jacksonville University"); and

Provision of a qualified and committed faculty (JU, n. d., "Goals and Objectives"; JU, 2001).

Positive learning environment to cater to the needs of the students:

Moreover, the institution had overly relied on donors' one-time gifts that were often tied to specific projects, without cultivating stable and general sources of revenues (Daigle, 2004; Filaroski, 2004). Comparison of the Values Inventories The juxtaposition of the explicit and the implicit values inventories reveals a fairly high degree of incongruence. In spite of the fact that the institution has striven to provide a learning program that is based on the liberal arts tradition and a positive learning environment, its actual performance and actions are incompatible with these ideals at times. At the same time, the fact the institution tried to return to its liberal arts origins by revising its core curriculum and increasing its experiential learning requirements indicates that the University of America has not deliberately acted against its
