Positive Discipline

The purpose of positive discipline is to enhance children's ability to control their behaviors, take responsibility for their actions and make appropriate decisions. More than just eliciting the desired behaviors from the children, positive discipline places a strong emphasis on promoting the healthy development of children. Essentially, the implementation of discipline should not lead to the degradation of the self-esteem and dignity of the children (Barakat and Clark 1). Rather, children should be empowered in the process of learning how to make decisions and displaying desired behaviors ("Positive Discipline"). In the remainder of this paper, the application of positive discipline to a discipline situation, involving a teacher and preschool students, will be described in detail.

In this discipline situation, two preschoolers - John and Mario - were fighting over toys. When John was playing with a train, Mario would try to take it away and vice versa. As a result, both children were highly disruptive to the rest of the class, during playtime.

To address the situation, Miss Lindheim, their teacher, decided to intervene by using positive discipline methods.

To begin with, Miss Lindheim stopped Mario from trying to take the train from John by acknowledging Mario's desire to play with the train, while highlighting John's interest in the same toy.
