A Psychological Evaluation

Lisa, a 22-year-old, single white female was court-ordered to come for psychological evaluation and treatment after repeatedly engaging in physical fights or assaults against customers or employees at her workplace. At the time of treatment, Lisa had just been dismissed from her position as a departmental store sales clerk after she violently assaulted a fellow employee who had discovered her in the act of stealing merchandise from the store. In fact, this was the fifth job that she had lost during the last three months. Because of her poor finances, Lisa was also on the brink of being evicted from her apartment for failing to pay rent for the second month in a row. She had no friends or relatives who would allow her to stay with them.

In spite of the fact that her fellow employee had suffered a severe concussion and broken ribs due to her attack, Lisa did not exhibit any signs of remorse towards the employee or regret for stealing from the store. In addition, although she had been arrested for committing a crime, Lisa did not appear at all concerned about her predicament. Rather, she seemed to be enjoying the opportunity to justify what she believed to be her rational response to the situation. According to Lisa, the fellow employee "would have been fine if she had minded her own business." Because this employee threatened to tell on her, Lisa felt that she was justified in taking any action to "silence" her. Her feelings and attitudes towards this employee and her action were similar to her perceptions towards her aggression to others in the past. In the previous work settings, Lisa had typically attacked the customers or the employees when the latter threatened to inform her superiors about her rude or aggressive conduct, stealing or failure to show up to work.
