Technology integration and the Classroom

Technology integration refers to the integration of technology into the curriculum, along with the instructional and learning processes in the classroom. More than just a tool for calculating student marks and a time filler, computers can assist teachers in increasing the quality of the learning experience (Antifaiff, p. 2). Technology essentially enables teachers and students to transcend the limitations that have been imposed upon them by conventional learning materials such as standardized textbooks (Kelly, Thomas, Knezek, & Bitter, 2000, p. 6). However, the incorporation of technological tools within the learning setting does not automatically provide educational benefits (Jukes & McCain, 2000). For example, having students use drill and practice software programs cannot be considered to be an effective use of technology for instructional purposes. Rather, effective technology integration occurs when students acquire the ability to utilize "technology tools to help them obtain information in a timely manner, analyze and synthesize the information and present it professionally" (Kelly et al., 2000, p. 6).In the remainder of this paper, how teachers can enhance the quality of their instruction by integrating technology effectively into the curriculum will first be discussed. echnologies and the pedagogical models. In order for technology to be integrated effectively into the classrooms, educators have to be willing to adopt an open mind in utilizing the computer technologies to transform their pedagogical approach and improve the quality of the learning experience. They have to make the effort to invest the time and energy to create new curricula that incorporate technology. Nonetheless, the teachers' attitudes towards classroom technology constitute only one of the factors related to effective technology integration.
Therefore, the second half of this paper will address how schools and school districts can support teachers in their endeavor to integrate technology effectively in educational settings. To begin with, school administrators and educators must be committed to the process of incorporating classroom technology by formulating a comprehensive plan that covers various components:
a long-term vision of curricular goals and the role of technology;
ongoing training of all educators;
costs of purchasing and maintaining technologies; and
procedures for assessing and improving the implementation of classroom technology (New Jersey Department of Education, 1998, p. 70).
