Drawing from 60 research documents that study the relationships between disciplinary strategies and student behaviors, Cotton offers a concise analysis of effective discipline practices at the school and classroom levels. Cotton finds that effective schoolwide discipline is characterized by: dedication of the school staff in enforcing the school policy; high standards of behavior; rules that are formulated by all stakeholders including students; the quality of school environment; and supportive school leadership. Furthermore, the studies indicate that the implementation of remediation measures often involves helping the students develop the skills to overcome their problem behavior and giving them the responsibility over the process. Effective classroom management strategies such as the consistent enforcement of class roles, clear explanations of sanctions, utilization of appropriate instructional techniques are also discussed. In closing, Cotton also describes the ineffective disciplinary practices that fall under the punitive and coercive categories.
