Narrative Therapy and Blended Families

The objective of this study is to determine whether blended families will be able to overcome the existing conflicts within the families through narrative therapy. The focus of this study is on conflicts that exist between parents. In this two-group, posttest-only, randomized experiment, five of the ten blended families will be randomly assigned to the control group that will receive no intervention. Although the control group will not be receiving the actual intervention (therapy), it is important that the family members get together during those three weeks and interact with each other. The other half of the group (experimental group) will participate in a three-week family therapy session, twice a week. During these sessions, a family therapist will utilize narrative therapy to work with the family to address the marital conflict and its impact on all the family members. At the end of the three weeks, the Domestic Conflict Index (DCI) will be administered to the parents, while the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS) will be used to obtain the children's perspectives. The DCI is a questionnaire that requires parents to answer "yes" or "no" with regards to a variety of behaviors that are classified under physical and psychological conflict. Quantitative scores of the level of marital conflict in the family will be obtained based on these responses. With the child version of the CTS, children rate their parents' behaviors on a scale of 0 ("never") to 3. The comparison between the responses of the control and the treatment groups will determine the effectiveness of the narrative therapy. The key hypothesis of this study is: Narrative therapy will be effective in helping blended families reduce the level of marital conflict.
