In order to define what a Veteran means to me, I must first come to grips with what war means, and there is no simple answer to that question. War is many things. It is terror, blood, and dying. It is fear, revenge, and hatred. War must be hell. I can't imagine what it must be like to have to listen for footsteps of an enemy who is trained to kill me. I know that soldiers are trained to kill and indeed, trained to even die, but I cannot imagine what it is like to stare at the operating end of a military grade machine gun in the hands of the enemy and, in the nanosecond that it takes for the bullet to leave the weapon and enter my body, know with absolute certainty that my life is about to end.
