This program was developed for New Jersey residents who are working people and who are uninsured. New Jersey FamilyCare is a federal and state funded health insurance program that covers most health needs, to include preventative care, hospitalization, emergency medical care, doctor's visits, laboratory services, drug prescriptions, glasses, and dental care; emergency transportation and mental health services are also provided in most cases. Children and families are covered in this program (immigrant restrictions are dropped for children, otherwise an immigrant must wait five years to be eligible). The program provides low or no-cost coverage through HMOs. Eligibility is based on monthly income and family size (assets are not considered). Co-payments are made by those with higher incomes, who can afford it (NJFamilyCare, 2002). The NJFamilyCare program has a web cite which provides ongoing information about the program (found at: WWW.njfamilycare.org). Included on this site is an 800 phone number, application download, and information regarding coverage, immigrant information, choosing an HMO, and other help
