HOECHST-ROUSSEL PHARMACEUTICALS, INC.: RU 486

Hoeschst-Roussel has developed a drug, RU 486, that causes a fertilized egg that has already implanted on the uterine to disengage; it also prevents eggs from implanting at all. Designed to be taken in the early stages of gestation under medical supervision, the drug effectively terminates pregnancy without surgical intervention. RU 486 has already been marketed successfully around the world, including in France and China, but the abortion debate in the United States has made this a politically charged product. There are similar techniques in place in the United States that result in the same outcome, but these are not actively marketed and are used rarely. Hoeschst-Roussel must now consider its marketing strategy for the so-called "morning after" pill.

There are numerous stakeholders associated with this product. Pregnant women, and women who might become pregnant, are one of the most obvious groups affected by the marketing decision of Hoeschst-Roussel. More specifically, women who should not become pregnant for medical reasons, and women who do not want a child but who become pregnant, have a stake in the company's marketing decision. Physicians who currently provide abortions have a stake in this issue since RU 486 would give them a nonsurgical alternative to traditional abortions.
