Education Reforms of Martin Luther

This essay is concerned with the educational reforms of Martin Luther. Also discussed is the extent Luther's ideas were influenced by the needs of the Reformation, and how the reforms reflect his theology. The Bible was an excellent educational instrument. However, considerably more was required not only for children, but also for adults. As Roland H. Bainton points out:

The children should be taught at church, at school, and at home; and to that end pastors, teachers, and parents should receive prior training. Hence Luther's plea that Catholic schools be replaced by municipal schools with a system of compulsory education including religion. 'The Scripture cannot be understood without the languages,' argued Luther, 'and the languages can be learned only in school. If parents cannot spare their children for a full day, let them send them for a part. I would wager that in half of Germany there are not over four thousand pupils in school. I would like to know where we are going to get pastors and teachers three years from now . ' The mere training of pastors, teachers, and parents would, however, not suffice. They must in turn be provided with a body of religious literature adapted to children (Bainton 262).

According to the reformed theological concepts of Luther, there needed to be a revised catechism to correct the doctrinal abuses of the Roman Catholic Church. wrote two catechisms: the Large Small Catechism for children.

These catechisms replaced the educational approach of the Roman Church.

Both the Large Catechism and the Small Catechism consisted of five reformed doctrinal approaches: (1) The Ten Commandments as a reflection of sin; (2) The Apostles' Creed as a declaration of forgiveness; (3) The Lord's Prayer as an acceptance of God's mercy; and (4) and (5) The two sacraments of baptism and communion as pathways of Grace.
