Given that it's the middle of April, a lot of people are just a little touchy on the issue of taxes. This is both understandable and foolish: Understandable because most of us work hard for the money that we make and we feel at some basic level that we are being cheated when we have to hand back to the government a large chunk of those earnings in taxes. But it is also foolish to argue against the need for taxes given that each one of us also wants safe roads and bridges, professional firefighters, and good schools. Taxes are the price we pay for a well-run society. And given how expensive it is to have a well-run society, the government is justified in raising taxes in those areas in which revenue can most painlessly be raised.
