The Catholic Church is so powerful and has been such an important force for so long in human society that it is difficult sometimes for us to remember how much the church has changed during its history. But any appearance of a monolithic church is certainly an illusion. Not only has the church made liturgical changes in its history but it has made even more substantial changes in terms of its structure and practice. This should not in fact be surprising: Any large and complex human institution such as the Catholic Church will change from one century to the next because of both internal and external pressures. This paper examines some of the key changes that took place in the Catholic Church between 500 and 1500, the period during which the church first emerged in its coherent, proto-modern form until the Protestant Reformation a millennium later, looking especially at the emphasis in different eras on the importance of celibacy.

It is important briefly to note (if we are to understand some of the most important changes in structure that took place in the church in the first centuries of the period that we are considering here) the ways in which the Catholic Church was influenced by the beliefs and practices of the major religions of the classical world.
