American society today abounds with stereotypes based on race, gender, religion, age. Each one of us is crippled in some measure by our ideas of how people who belong to one group or another "should" behave and believe, and this is true whether we are the subject or object o prejudice. This paper proposes a project to overcome prejudice. This is not a grand scheme - it will not end in a moment the violence and even warfare that have at their basis the worst kinds of stereotypes. But it is a beginning, and stereotypes must be overcome by such small steps.Before this paper describes the project (which was carried out on a test basis) it is important to discuss why prejudices are so widespread and so seemingly intractable to human cognition and human society. Prejudice is based on our pan-human ability (and our pan-human inclination) to place things into categories. This is in fact an important and even vital evolutionary skill.
