Happiness as a Goal of Life

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The father of a friend of mine sings operatic arias during breakfast each day. You might think from this fact that he is a good singer, but he is not. He is a terrible singer, especially when he sings the coloratura arias that he is so fond of. You might think from this fact that he is given to self-delusion - believing that he sings well when he does not. But this is not the case. He knows that he is a terrible singer. But he doesn't care. He believes that happiness should be the goal of life.

He discusses the importance of happiness if anyone happens to comment on his singing. Life is full of duties and responsibilities - and there's nothing wrong with that, he argues. He is not interested in being a hedonist: He does not think that people should dedicate themselves to pleasure at the expense of making whatever contribut
