We like the concept of the decade. It presents us with a view of history that appear tidy, with neat borders. We know that the Twenties Roared and that the Sixties was one long Decade of Love and that the Eighties was the decade of Greed. Of course, history is never actually this tidy, but such epithets are helpful. Frederick Allen, in his history of the 1920s, Only Yesterday : An Informal History of the 1920's, indulges in just a touch of this tendency to simplify and label while also including enough of the messiness of real history to give us the sense that he has gotten the Twenties "right". Allen approaches his subject with something of the perspective of the journalist who is writing about the almost-now as well as with something of the perspective of the history who is writing about an era already consigned to a settled place in the archives, which also promotes a sense of the authentic.
