Human Figure in British and French Sculptors

Although we think of the twentieth century - and especially the decades after World War I - as being an era in which the figurative bowed before the abstract within the realm of fine art. And it is certainly true that the last century was dominated by abstraction, by the desire to cast aside what many artists (and art collectors) saw as the tyranny of the representational. However, given the vastness and the complexity of the artworld, it can never be monolithic, and the figure has remained central to the work of at least some artists, and especially sculptors. This paper analyzes the ways in which the human figure has continued to be definitive in the works of French and British sculptors during the twentieth and now the twenty-first centuries.
