Given how much time families spend together, one might think that family members would have learned to talk to each other somewhere along the way. But while there are certainly some families that have learned to talk - and to listen - to each other, many families demonstrate remarkably ineffective communication styles. To some extent such poor communication arises from the communication styles of the individual involved - as well as from the family's joint experiences, beliefs and expectations. But poor communication in today's family also arises from structural and external problems such the continuing jobless recovery that has pushed many families into poverty and made the lives of others still more precarious.
