When we hear the phrase "interior design" we are likely to think about lavish interior spreads, and interior designers as being at home only in Beverly Hills and the Manhattan lofts. However, the importance of interior design and the need for skilled and qualified interior designers is far more widespread: The lives of every individual can be enhanced by an environment that is at least touched by beauty. An at-least implicit acknowledgement of this fact is embedded in the popularity that Martha Stewart enjoyed before her late unfortunate encounters with the SEC: It is indeed a good thing to make our surroundings both useful and beautiful to the extent that our resources allow us to do so. Neither beauty nor utility are frivolous. Learning how to create spaces that are both useful and lovely is my primary goal in applying to the interior decorating graduate program.However, even if we can get people to agree to the fact that the design and decoration of all of the interior spaces that we spend most of our time in is important, there are still challenges that face the interior designer. Interior design is in important ways like a number of other creative fields like photography: Nearly everyone thinks that they can take perfectly good photographs or design a beautiful kitchen (even if at some level they probably understand that a professional would do a better job).
