Whenever a questionable police shooting occurs - and this is especially the case when the officer is white and the person shot is African-American or Latino - a number of questions arise about the fundamental fairness of the American justice system and more broadly about American society. Community activists for minority groups point to such incidence as indicative of the lesser value that is placed by white Americans on the lives of minority Americans and the fact that such shootings are often found to be "justifiable" by police review boards (as well as juries) heightens the belief of many that there is a different standard used when a white person shoots someone who is black or brown than the reverse.Poised against such arguments are the voices of police officers, their own families, and the work of a number of scholars, that the decisions that police officers have to make in choosing to use their weapons or not are made so quickly that they have no time to think about the race of the subject: They react in a split-second to what they perceive as a threat to their own safety and lives.
