According to the book jacket of Potential Weapons, the author, Jocelyn Lieu, explores the risks of self-discovery. The book jacket adds that the characters in Potential Weapons lead bi-cultural lives, and that their ethnicity is not initially obvious in any of these short stories. In this book, Lieu explores the struggles for individual identity in the face of racial discrimination and cultural identity crisis's. Through her stories, Lieu suggests that fundamental changes in character occur in individuals only as a result involvement in situations that are beyond their control. Lieu book, Potential Weapons suggests that when cultures clash or long held beliefs are challenged, individuals are forced to address certain generational or cultural differences.

During these clashes, the characters in the stories must address these questions:

Is our cultural heritage a legacy, or is it a burden that we inherit?

I believe that Lieu intends this series of short stories for a college aged reader and early adults because the book is about self-discovery. During the late teens and early twenties, individuals develop their personal ethics and morals, and try to find their place in society.
