Fairchild College Bookstore is an on-campus bookstore with a complex legacy applications portfolio, all related to the business necessity of inventory control. Since its inception, the bookstore has lost money and now campus administration officials have given the bookstore one last chance to become a profit center. The assumption is that an analysis of its applications portfolio will help. The book store has lost money every fiscal quarter since its inception in 1994, in spite of spending $1.9 million from the General Capital fund to purchase new computers and software. The fact that the wrong computers and software were purchased has a great bearing on the inventory control problems facing Fairchild Bookstore, problems that can only be solved by studying the situation using a systems approach, necessary since the bookstore has been given one year to become profitable or risk being closed.
