CURRENT VENTURE CAPITAL COMPANIES THAT EXPERIENCED LOSSES DURING THE 1999-2003 PERIODThis research identifies 15 venture capital firms that continue as viable entities in early 2004, but which experienced substantial losses on one or more of their investments during the 1999-2003 inclusive period. The venture capital firms identified are a mix of public and private firms. Accurate financial data for the private firms are not readily available. While financial data are available for the public firms, the data are not in all cases current, as the losses experienced by some of the venture capital firms have resulted in reporting delays. Applied Technology invested capital in 65 ventures. The company suffered a loss connected with its investment in Caspian Networks. Caspian Networks has not failed but the company began a slide in 2002. Applied Technology was one of 16 venture capital companies that invested $262 million in Caspian Networks ("Caspian Lays Off 42 Workers", 2002). The venture capital company remains in business in 2004. The company is cautious in seeking new investment opportunities, however, because of conditions in the general economy (Hoover's Online, 2004).

CMGI, Inc.
CMGI was especially hard hit by the dot.com collapse. CMGI has investments in more than 70 Web-based firms. Today, the company has investments in only 10 Web-based companies. MotherNature.com was one of the losing ventures for CMGI (Sandoval, 2000).
CMGI remains a viable venture capital investor in 2004. The company, however, continues to struggle to regain a sound financial footing.
