It could be argued that nearly all forms of literature contain some element of realism. Certainly, a perception of reality seems to be the goal of most literary works of note throughout history. That said, realism as an epoch in literature seems to come in waves of culture and tradition. The most recent wave of realism--that which we understand to be "contemporary realism" comes after other such waves of gothic tradition and romanticism, but realism seems to be the prevalent literary ideal in today's society.
In all of contemporary literature, we seem to see the elements of realism, from the diary-like humor of Jennifer Weiner to the plausible fantasy of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. So
