Obesity and Eating Habits in Children

This is an excerpt from the paper...

EFFECTS OF TEACHING HEALTH HABITS TO OBESE CHILDREN ON EATING, EXERCISE, AND SELF ESTEEM

This study will investigate the effects of teaching obese children better habits of eating and exercise, on improved habits and self-esteem. The subjects for the study will be drawn from the general school population at M' Smythe Elementary in Pasadena, Texas (ages 6 to 10). Subjects (n = 20) will receive a brief intervention regarding nutrition, activity, and snacking. Subjects will serve as their own control. Each participant will be pre- and post-tested regarding eating behavior, activity, snacking behavior, and levels of self-esteem. The hypothesis will be tested through the application of quantitative analysis (one-way ANOVA) to the data collected.

Obarzanek (2002) reported findings from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood institute Growth and Health Study that investigated biological, behavioral, psychosocial, and sociologic correlates of obesity during adolescence. Findings from this longitudinal data demonstrated that pubertal maturation is associated with significant adiposity gain in whites and blacks, with the largest increases found at the initiation of pubertal maturation and at menarche. The study findings also noted that obesity rate in both groups was doubling, during the ten years between ages 9-10 years and 18-19 years. Consequences of this obesity include increases in Type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents (Kimm & Obarzanek, 2002). Inconsistent findings regarding obesity factors, may be due to measurement issues and definitions of obesity (Goran, 1998; Kimm & Obarzanek, 2002). Major Studies of Treatment for Childhood Obesity Moran (1999) stated that efforts to reduce childhood obesity have increased in the past several decades. Moran (1999) reported that up to 30% of children are affected and yet this condition remains under-diagnosed and under-treated. Moran (1999) stated that these obese children may suffer from life-long physical and emotional
