Among the many questions asked by those involved in the 21st century exploration of Adult Intellectual Development are the following: (1) What is intelligence and how is it appropriately measured: (2) What are the variations in terms of peaks and declines in adult intelligence? (3) What factors affect a person's intelligence during adulthood?; (4) What are the generational differences and within-generation differences in intelligence in adulthood?; and (5) How should science establish sufficient competence for independent living in the later stages of life? The answers to each and every one of these questions will have great importance during this century in terms of helping society to meet the needs of a large older population.
