The TTA cafeteria; A Case Study

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The TTA cafeteria staff suffers from a lack of discipline encouraged partly by the current management personnel, partly by the current management style, and partly by the fact that most of the staff is young and relatively immature. The staff, particularly on weekends, engages in "sports tournaments" that feature bagel hockey, baseball (with a hard boiled egg) and "king of the eggs." The tournaments take place largely on weekends or during other off-period times when there are few customers about, and do not result in a great deal of lost food. The cafeteria manager does not participate in the games, but the supervisors do. The tournaments are conducted out of sight of the customers, but the manager recently walked in on a game of bagel hockey.

This expectation, while critical to the professional development of the agency and to the individual development of the nurses, has led to problems with senior staff members. There is now severe discord between the senior nurses and Annemarie, with the result that almost any activity that one engages in is misread or misinterpreted by the other. Rachel can no longer stand removed from the fray. She must get involved and set up a clear communication system for airing grievances as well as for training all the nursing staff in the forms, regulations and procedures that will help alleviate the fiscal crisis. Annemarie's goals are not unattainable and her expectations are not unreasonable, but she has not successfully communicated the rationale behind them to the nursing staff. The senior staff, on the other hand, is used to a laid-back environment where the formal structure that Annemarie is imposing was lackin
