The following paper presents case assessment and treatment of a client. A client description is followed by an assessment, which includes strengths and weaknesses. Focused Brief Therapy is presented and as with assessment, treatment is considered within the Generalist Practice Model.Client Description and Presenting Problem The client, is a 35-year-old, female of German decent (Mrs. C.). Mrs. C. was born in Germany and moved to the United States around two years ago. She has been married for 5 years and has no children. She speaks good English. She and her husband were educated in Germany and the U.S. Her husband is a professor at a university. She has a degree in chemistry and works for a private laboratory. Mrs. C. reported that she and her husband have been together for at least 7 years but have been having difficulties for the last five years. They argue, rarely make love, and avoid meaningful conversation. Her husband started to become verbally abusive and hit her on occasions. She has threatened to leave her husband and has mentioned divorce. Following this type of interaction, her husband becomes cold and withdrawn for days, at times leaving. Mrs. C. suspects he is having an affair. Mrs. C. stated that she wants her marriage to work but does not know what to do. She feels unable to continue facing his mood swings and abusiveness and is now walking on eggs to avoid his anger.

For example, the client may have cultural beliefs that stigmatize or prohibit receiving help from others (Poulin, 2000).
For this case, the client does not appear to present with any particular cultural distinctions or stigma associated with help-seeking behavior. Mrs. C. appears willing to receive help, and able to follow through with suggestions despite her fear of her husband.
Assessment of Values and Ethics
The generalist practice model includes social work values and ethics. The Code of Workers Code of Ethics identifies the values and related ethical principles. Four values that influence the generalist practice model include service to others, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, and importance of human relationships. Standards list ethical responsibilities, with detailed guidelines for social worker conduct.
