Bajan: The Creole Language of Barbados

lthough that term can be misleading because not all R's that occur after vowels are excluded in non-rhotic English.

Wikipedia (2, 1) identified Bajan as "an English-based Creole language spoken in Barbados," and noted that unlike other Caribbean Creoles, Bajan is rhotic and has a strong tendency to realize word-final /t/ as [?]. Wikipedia (2, 1) stated:

Thus the Bajan pronunciation of start, [st????], contrasts sharply with the pronunciation of other Caribbean speakers, [sta?t].

It must be noted that the Bajan dialect is largely spoken and rarely written. For this reason, there is no official grammar or orthographic rules for the dialect. A result of this is that the spelling of and use of words in Bajan tends to vary significantly ("Bajan Dialect: Overview" 1). Bajan tends to be used in informal situations whereas English - standard English - is more often used in formal or professional situations. However, in recent years, a number of Barbadian poets, songwriters and playwrights have embraced this national language and begun to incorporate it into songs and written materials.
