ROLE OF COMMUNICATION IN CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

This is an excerpt from the paper...

ROLE OF COMMUNICATION IN CONFLICT MANAGEMENT RELATED TO DIVORCE

This research reviews and analyzes the role of communication in conflict management strategies applied in couples situations involving divorce. The presentation of the findings of the review discuss (1) interpersonal communication, (2) behavioral system balance, (3) conflict avoidance, and (4) communication in couples situations involving divorce or the potential of divorce.

Dealing effectively with situations involving interpersonal conflict requires the development and use of interpersonal communication skills. Interpersonal communication is defined as the process linking discontinuous living entities with one another. Communication is made possible by the combined effects of perception, evaluation, and expression (Sptizack, 1998).

The social process of interpersonal communication involves three sets of determinants ù sensory, environmental, and psychological. The deterioration of the quality of parent-child communications in family environments characterized by divorce is associated primarily with the latter two sets of determinants. Three predominant models of emotion are present in the literature ù the organismic, the interactional, and the social constructionist. The major difference between these models is the significance accorded in them to social influence. The social constructionist models accords the greatest level of importance to social influence, followed in order by the interactionist model and the organismic (Williams, 1998). The organismic model posits that social influences enter in only to elicit feeling, and to regulate expression. The interactionist model builds on the base of the organismic model to posit that social factors enter not simply before and after but interactively during the experience of emotion. Thus, the interactionist model recognizes more points of social entry than are recognized by the organismic model. According to the interactionist
