Domestic Violence

This is an excerpt from the paper...

This literature review addresses the following areas relevant to this study: background, theory, prevalence and nature of intimate abuse among Latinos, changing gender roles, risk factors, types of abuse, acculturation process, intervention, and conclusion.

According to the 1945 definition, domestic violence is: "any husband who willfully inflicts upon his wife corporal injury resulting in a traumatic condition. . . is guilty of a felony . . ." Latino culture stresses this responsibility, with Latino men feeling the need to fulfill the role of provider more so than either African American or White men. However, Mexican American men (and for that matter, most Latino men) find that they are classless within their families. Many have financial problems, and feel the pain of not been able to provide for their families. Many studies of Latino society report that, because of the higher cost of living, women often had to work outside the home when they migrated to the United States. This forced their role as wife to change, as it added the responsibility of co-provider to the already existing traditional responsibilities of mother and/or wife. However, according to Taylor et al. (1999), recent immigrating men tend to established communities with kin-based units that maintain traditional role divisions and they are therefore never required to perform fema
