Learning From Experience
This is an excerpt from the paper...
This paper will describe and analyze two specific experiences which I had which I consider most important from the standpoint of my personal and professional development. The first part of the discussion will point out how one particular event changed the way in which I viewed my country's role in the world. Dealing with this particular event gave me experiences which also prodded me to learn some skills that would help me later in my career and life in general. In other words, one particular major event helped me to change my perspective and gave me very important work experience. The second part of this paper will apply the text of Lessons of Experience to another experience which I had that also helped me develop my personal and professional life. The second experience occured while I was working in a part-time position. I made a mistake which I learned a great deal from and I will discuss how and why I made this mistake. However, I was rudely awakened by the reality of war. Unfortunately, I was not able to begin attending college directly after high school due to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. I also learned that we needed the support of foreigners and this helped me appreciate the work of others from different countries. Many of my friends had to "branch out" their contacts and learn to deal with people who did not speak much Arabic but who were still on our side and wanted to help us. From this I learned the importance of global networking, and that no country is an island, that each country needs help from other countries.
My new global view of the world helped me focus on an international career as opposed to a local one. Ultimately the war made me want to come study in America as opposed to remaining in Kuwait because I believed that I could do more for my country if I learned how to deal with people in foreign countries than if I retained the isolated view and set of experiences that my childhood presented me.
