The Bible and Prayer

A. According to the bible, prayer should be done in private and not in public (Matthew 6:5). Whatever good deeds are done and donations given should also be done in private, and big public displays of generosity should not be performed (Matthew 6:2,3). Matthew 6:4 says "your Father who sees in secret will reward you." It also says not to heap empty praise on the father when praying like the gentile do, because this is not what he wants (Matthew 6:7). It recommends just saying what is now known as the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9-16). It admonishes people not to store up worldly goods, which will only rot away or be stolen by thieves (Matthew 6:19). Amos 5:11 says that storing up personal possessions is of no use because you will not live to enjoy them. Amos 21-22 says that God does not want festivals and burnt offerings. Luke 12:15 also says to guard against greed. Romans 12:17 says not to take revenge on evildoers because, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord." Luke 12:20 says to feed your enemy and give them drink.

The Quran, on the other hand, says of prayer (Sura 17:78-82; Sura 30:30-32) to establish regular prayers, and recitation of the Quran at dawn and at sunset, and say additional prayers in the night, but does not mention doing so in private only, unlike the bible (Matthew 6:5). It says to cleanse the body before prayer from dirt and contact with women (Sura 4:43). The Quran also instructs followers to be generous and help others whenever possible (Sura 2:177). It demands fasting, particularly on Ramadan during the daylight hours, unless one is too ill or is traveling (Sura 2:183-187). It also commands men to be with their wives on the nightly feasts during Ramadan, but not in the mosques. Unlike the bible, the Quran demands sacrifice of a cow during the Hajj, and offerings, or fast in their place (Sura 2:196-203). Later it talks of offerings of camels (Sura 22:26-37).
