The Chinese curse that one might live in interesting times seems to have been visited on the people of the United States with a vengeance in recent years. Ironically enough, the People's Republic of China, which has been an American nemesis since 1949, when the government changed from a (more or less) democratic republic to a form of government controlled by a communist cadre, is culturally and economically on the ascendant from a global standpoint, though politically it remains a police state. The irony is compounded by evidence that the United States government, in the face of declining economic expectations for virtually all except the American socioeconomic elite (AP) and in a context of the fallout from the events of September 11, 2001, has marshaled its law enforcement and intelligence capabilities in the service of police-state-like behavior (Lichtblau and Risen).
