Tom Rath, the title character in the film The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, faces numerous challenges to his integrity in both his personal and business life. In terms of the job he is expected to conform to a situation over which he has no control--or believes he has none. The decision he has to make is whether to be honest about his opinion of the speech or manipulate the situation--as the other corporate men do--in order to protect his job. The protection of his job means not only lying about his opinions but about the work he has done and this involves contradicting the person to whom he reports. The other corporate workers are shown as being completely involved in jockeying for position and willing to say whatever is necessary to retain the favor of Hopkins, the network head. Rath's decision is complicated by the potential threat to his family's security that losing the job could entail. Rath's responses to the challenges are developed in terms of the contrast he makes between situations he faced in the war and his present-day problems.
