A minority of Americans and the tobacco companies are harming everyone. Smoking should be prohibited in all states. The dangers of smoking have been proven. Cigarettes contain the drug nicotine which is addicting. Drugs are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, but cigarettes are not regulated. Anyone over the age of 18 may buy them. Children and teenagers smoke. Many without their parents' permission. The government has a duty to protect the public. Tobacco has been an important crop for southern farmers since colonial times. Native Americans introduced European explorers to tobacco (Cooper 849). Cotton and tobacco were the most important crops of the southern economy. Cotton needs good soil to grow then ruins the soil. Tobacco is a weed and will grow anywhere. After the Civil War, cotton production fell. Tobacco became the most important crop to grow for money. In 1881, the cigarette rolling machine was invented. The cigarette industry was born. The government gave cigarettes to soldiers during World War I and World War II (Cooper 849). In 1964, the first surgeon general's report on smoking was made. The report linked tobacco and cancer (Cooper 849). The tobacco companies are against regulation. America is a free country. A person should be able to do what he wants as long as he hurts no one.
