Naturopathy

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Naturopathy uses a combination of traditional medicine, herbal remedies, and changes in eating patterns and lifestyle to relieve pain and cure illness. Naturopathic doctors use techniques such as clinical nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, behavioral therapy, physiotherapy, and Oriental and Aryuvedic medicine practices which they believe stimulate the bodies natural healing processes without the use of drugs or surgery. This paper will look at several pathological states, what causes them, and how these causes relate to naturopathic theory.

If we cut ourselves, we heal; if we are bruised, strained, or suffer a broken bone, healing starts immediately; if we are exposed to infection, our immune system deals with it. These are examples of the body's natural tendency towards repairing itself (5:8). This tendency is known as homeostasis, the maintenance of the body's internal organs and defense to compensate for external health hazards. Through homeostasis, the organs neither underproduce nor overproduce, and each organ facilitates the functions of every other organ (1:4). For a large part, communications within the body to maintain homeostasis occur through the nervous system or through chemical stimulation. The autonomic nervous system is in a large part responsible for control of the complex communication system that regulates bodily functions. The autonomic nervous system works without the person thinking about it, and without any noticeable indication that it is

xhaustion Stage. At this point, the body's inability to adapt further will lead to actual disease (5:9). In the case of an overworked muscle, the muscle becomes increasingly less elastic, placing stress on points where it is anchored to the bone. Eventually, fibrosis and inflammation, leading to fibrositis, will occur. The resulting muscular imbalances cause wear and tear on the joints, often causing arthritis. Stress can be defined as a reaction to any stimulus or interference that upsets normal functions (5:849). It can be brought on by internal conditions such as illness, pain, or emotional conflict, or by external circumstances such as a death in the family, or financial problems. Even a positive experience can be a stress-provoking experience. Stress can be caused by allergic reactions, poor diet, nutritional deficiencies, substance abuse, or biochemical imbalances in the body. Although stress is an integral part of everyday life, prolonged bouts of stress can lead to exhaustion and minor illness, along with more serious health problems. Eventually, chronic stress exhausts the body's ability to adapt. If stress continues and remains untreated for prolonged periods, coping functions will be compromised and illness w
