Politics in the Middle East

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Bill, James A. and C. Leiden. Politics in the Middle East. Boston: Little, Brown & Company, 1979.

Bill and Leiden delve into the intricacies of politics in the Middle East with an emphasis on the problems and patterns of the area. Each chapter covers a different topic and its relationship to politics: modernization, the role of Islam, family groups, oil, historical patrimonial leadership, new leaders, the military, the Arab-Israeli relationship, and political ideology. Kissinger's role after the Arab-Israeli War is examined. His role in getting the Geneva Conference established is mentioned and his "shuttle" diplomacy is defined.

Brown, Seyom. The Crises of Power. New York: Columbia University Press, 1979.

Brown writes about the Nixon era and the role of Kissinger in that era in terms of the crises faced by the administration, such as the War in Vietnam, the wars in the Middle East, rebellions in Latin America, the Soviet threat, and the role of a communist giant called China in the world. He suggests ways in which Kissinger manipulated events related both to the Soviets and to the Middle East.

Cockcroft, James D. Latin America: History, Politics, and U.S. Policy. 2nd edition. Chicago: Nelson-Hall Publishers, 1996.

James Crockcroft's book is a detailed examination of relationship between the United States and Latin America. He presents the historical overview of the relationship and carefully covers each country of the region, explaining their historical, po

Hersh paints a portrait of Kissinger as an ego-driven man who allowed concerns about his own image and sense of self to decide issues of foreign policy, leading in many instances to disaster. Hersh believes that many of the issues facing the Nixon Administration might have been solved if Kissinger had not had this ego-driven orientation. Hersh finds that the way leaders wield power is not always driven by ideology but often by psychology, which may not be evident. Loftus, John and M. Aarons. The Secret War Against the Jews: How Western Espionage Betrayed the Jewish People. New York: St. Martin's Griffin, 1994. Loftus and Aarons present the argument that although the United States and Great Britain profess to be the friends and allies of Israel both countries have betrayed Israel to the Arabs in their attempt to woo Arab oil and multinational finance. That there is a network of spies that have operated in the area for many years creating huge problems for first Palestine and later Israel. In 1968 Henry Kissinger told the Israeli's that the Uni
