Essay About a Friend
This is an excerpt from the paper...
I have not seen my friend Robert for several months. He is an interesting character and much more interested in people than am I. He is also braver in some respects. I watched him over a period of several weeks when he was investigating "human nature," or so he called it. He was completely unembarrassed to play roles while interviewing people or while testing their reactions. I would have been too embarrassed to try, but he was not ruffled in the least. He can tell the most enormous lies with a straight face, and after watching his experiments for a while, I realized I could never be sure if he was telling me the truth or not. There was nothing malicious about him, but there would always be a question for me as to whether I had become the subject of an experiment or not in the future. Robert was a psychology major who was really dedicated to testing ideas he had about how people behaved, and he was always ready to act out a role in order to get an answer. He became interested in how people react not to the person but to their mode of dress. He said he wanted to show me how people behaved differently in social situations according to how the other person with whom they are interacting is dressed. I suppose this will one day make him a good researcher, and it could also

rules may apply, they are not enforced as are bank rules. When Robert was well dressed, striking up a conversation was not that difficult, and people behaved in a friendly manner for the most part. There seemed to be a tacit assumption that whatever he wanted was probably legitimate and that he deserved to be listened to when he was speaking. This was not the assumption made when he was unkempt. Then, the assumption seemed to be that he was up to something. Perhaps they thought Robert was a panhandler and was about to ask them for money--there are a lot of people who do that today, and many people become quite belligerent in fending them off. They may have thought he was not mentally as competent as they, since people who are disheveled often do not take care of themselves as well as we expect. Some of the people looked askance as he approached. Often they would wrinkle their nose, whether out of a general feeling of distaste or because they thought he might have an unpleasant odor is impossible to say.
In all of these situations, Robert played the part to the hilt and seemed to enjoy every moment of it. I also could see that he was observing the other people closely--he is good at playing a part, but he is not so good
