The next hypothesis is that pubertal change will have some positive consequences. If change occurs in such a way that the adolescent's appearance more closely approximates that of an adult and hence grants the prestige of adult status, then the change may be advantageous.

The third hypothesis states that the timing of pubertal change is the critical factor. Pubertal change is neither positive or negative in and of itself. Furthermore, being part of a minority and deviant relationship to peers is stressful, so puberty will have the greatest impact on two diviant groups: the early developers who are changing when few others are doing so, and the late developers who lag behind the rest of their peer group. The groups that are not developing at the same rate as the majority will react negatively. In addition, early developers will exhibit negative effects during and just after pubertal change.
