Parenting Style & Adolescent Behavior

According to Papalia and Olds (1995), adolescent psychology is very much influenced by parenting style. which the authors state can be classified into three basic categories. For example, Lloyd and Miller (1997) report that several studies have found that when parents are either neglectful or overprotective, they tend to have children who develop depression and other psychoemotional problems in adolescence.

In looking up articles on parenting style and adolescent behavior, I found that a good deal of research has examined for which of the three parenting styles is the most positive contributor to adolescent behavior; for example, Chorpita and Barlow (1998) report that overcontrolling parenting styles are responsive for a good deal of adolescent anxiety, depression, and feelings of helplessness.
