The Asian Indian Experience in the U.S.

America is a nation made up primarily of immigrants and their descendants. The Asian Indian experience in the United States is both similar to some of these immigrant groups and different from them because of unique aspects of Indian culture, the circumstances of immigration, and the way this particular ethnic group has sought to retain certain elements of its culture while adapting in other respects to American culture. The book by Parmatma Saran offers a study by the author of the elements involved in Asian Indian immigration and how that population has fared in American society.

The author begins by considering the nature of America as a multi-ethnic society containing people from all over the world. However, this also raises the question of what it means to be an American, what elements can be considered distinctly American, and similar issues. The author states that the main purpose of his study is to describe, analyze, and examine the case of the Asian Indians living in the United States with an exploration of their habits, family, activities, religion, education, employment, language, and food, among other aspects of their lives.
